I FISHING

Fly fishing between Alpine rivers and Northern Italian lakes

Three different waters, one common thread: reading the river and understanding the fish. From the streams of Valtellina to the Lecco branch, all the way to the Brianza lakes. Catch & Release always, never more than two people, full gear available on request.

Fly fishing outings run from March to December on alpine rivers and lakes of Northern Italy, for brown, marble and rainbow trout, grayling and char, with dry fly, nymph and streamer techniques. Maximum two anglers per outing.

Where and when

  • Alpine streams (brown trout): from the first week of March to the first week of October.
  • Alpine lakes (trout, char): from the first week of June to the first week of October.

Indicated months are approximate and depend on weather conditions and annual regulations from local fishing authorities.

IV FLIES

Every fly, chosen for the right water

There's a moment, the evening before, when I choose the flies for the next day. I have tied them for years, one by one: dries, nymphs and streamers for every species and every condition. So on the river I always have the right pattern for what the fish is eating, not a generic assortment.

V ETHICS

Catch & Release, always

Every fish I catch goes back in the water. I handle it with care, photograph it if you want a memento, and return it to the river as quickly as I can. For me Catch & Release is not a rule to put up with: it is the reason these streams are still alive, and will be for whoever comes to fish them after us.

VII QUESTIONS

Fishing questions

Do you accept complete beginners?

Yes, I welcome both beginners and experienced anglers. For first-timers I cover the basics during the trip, from casting technique to choosing the right fly for the conditions.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes, to fish in Italy you need a daily or annual permit from the local fishing authority (FIPSAS or the specific river consortium). I can help with the paperwork if you want to have it ready for the day of the trip.

Can I rent gear from you?

Yes, on request I provide complete gear: rod, reel, waders and wading boots. Let me know during our first WhatsApp conversations if you will need it and what size, so I can organize it in advance.

How many anglers maximum per trip?

Maximum two anglers per trip. Published rates are for a single angler; the second angler adds €100 to the rate.

Do we fish in rain or bad weather?

Yes, in fact fishing is often better with overcast skies because fish rise more willingly. If the weather makes the trip unsafe (strong storms, river flooding), we reschedule to an alternative date without any issue.

Where do you fly fish in Valtellina and on Lake Como?

The waters covered are the alpine rivers of Valtellina and Valchiavenna (Adda, Mera and tributaries), the alpine and pre-alpine lakes of upper Brianza and Lake Como on the Lecco branch. The operating base is in Lierna.

What time of year is fly fishing on the alpine rivers?

The season runs from March to December, with different peak periods for each species. The seasons table on this page shows the right months for trout, grayling and char.
